Welcome to the nightmare!

We have lived in our defective Reynen and Bardis home for

And we are still waiting for them to fix it.

This website is about our Reynen and Bardis nightmare.  We purchased a home from Reynen and Bardis in December of 2002.  Immediately we started to notice some cracking in our walls.  We contacted Reynen and Bardis and were told that this was normal settling and we should wait 90 days and they would correct the issue.  Well it has been all down hill from there.  We did wait the 90 days and per their request we submitted their "90 Day Report".  We included the structural issues as well as the normal minor issues that arise with a new home.  We turned this report in on March 19th 2003.  We had to send certified letters and make many phone calls to get the first list of minor issue corrected,  Reynen and Bardis finally corrected our first list of minor issues on August 7th 2003.  It took Reynen and Bardis 141 days to correct things like a window sill not painted.  After 441 days and the attention of several news organizations, including TV, we are starting to get out house worked on.  We have spent thousands of dollars on our own geotechnical and structural engineers.  Our engineer's reports state that Reynen and Bardis failed to adequately address the drainage around our home.  Reynen and Bardis have yet to fix our structural issues.  When we were purchasing our home we noticed they had to replace the sheetrock in their model.  We were told by Reynen and Bardis that post tension foundations would not have the same issue.  There is too much information to list here so take a look through our website.  We will post current events in our forum so that everyone can see for themselves the nightmare we have faced.  This web site was set up to help others not fall into the same trap with their new home.  We know of other people with the same structural issues with Reynen and Bardis, if you want to share your story on this site please let us know.  Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.  Welcome to our nightmare.

Thanks for taking the time to look around,
Matthew McGuire

General Construction Defect News

07/14/2004

We have received quite a few requests for updated information on what is occurring. We have not posted any news in a while due to the fact that we are just waiting for the rest of our home to be fixed, which it is "tentatively" scheduled to start in the beginning of August.  Read more and comments.

Well we have passed a major milestone.  500 days!!  That is how long we have lived in our defective Reynen and Bardis home.  500 days without the full use and enjoyment of our home.  500 days without being able to paint a wall.  500 days without being able to landscape.  500 days dealing with Reynen and Bardis, engineers, and lawyers.  500 days of stress.  And the worst part is they still have yet to finish fixing our home.  It took Reynen and Bardis about 7 months to build our home and they have not fixed it in over 16 months.

Well it has been over a month and we are still not done with the trenching.  There are very few things that need to be done now, but our 5 day fix has now turned into 34 days and counting.  Comments

Reynen and Bardis has reduced the total number of rooftops in Rancho Murieta South.  Looks like they thought this would satisfy the county.  Hopefully Reynen and Bardis will address the foundation issues and poor construction practices before any more homeowners become victims.  Comments

Success (or at least partial success). Under the pressure of public scrutiny Reynen and Bardis has started to trench around our home. This is the first step that needs to be completed in our journey to get our home fixed. After they are finished with the trenching we will wait 3 to 6 months for the foundation to lower back to the level when the house was first constructed. If that goes as planned, Reynen and Bardis will need to temporarily move us while they install helical piers, float a polymer compound on our foundation, replace the sheetrock in our entire downstairs and inspect the walls for any additional structural damage. After living in our defective home for 441 days and using the pressure of the media outlets we have started to get our home fixed. Follow along for a day by day photo montage.

Two news stories aired yesterday about our issues with Reynen and Bardis.  One was on our local ABC news and the other was on our local NBC news.  See the ABC video here and the NBC video here. These news programs were the first admission by Reynen and Bardis that they will fix our home according to our joint engineer's report.  We have been told many things by Reynen and Bardis that have not come true so we are not holding our breath, but I am glad to see Reynen and Bardis make this statement on TV.  It is sad that it has taken such public pressure to encourage Reynen and Bardis to fix our home properly.  Once I have this agreement in writing I will feel we on our way to a resolution.

There is an issue that affects all Rancho Murieta residence.  It has to do with open space and environmental concerns in Rancho Murieta.  See the letter we wrote to Sacramento County board of supervisors about this issue.  Also see the coverage on ranchomurieta.com and recent comments.  Our story was just published in the River Valley Times with a follow-up promised.

A news article was just aired on Channel 40 (FOX).  In the video a Reynen and Bardis employee is quoted as saying "We re-designed the foundation and we're building now a different foundation that addresses the expansivity of the soil"  Good try but we have this new foundation.  It is called post tension and it did not stop our foundation from heaving and our walls from cracking.  See the video here.  Also see our response here to both ranchomurieta.com articles.
