Letter sent to the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger on 11/20/2003:

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

I am writing to your office in response to:

Tuesday, November 18, 2003. California: Schwarzenegger Halts Pending Regulations

"Lobbyists for California homebuilders applauded the governor's order Monday."

When I bought my new home I believed that it was safe and sound for my family to live in, I was wrong. Regardless of licensing and regulatory agencies in the state of California, my home has numerous defects. I was devastated to discover that on your first day in office you are making provisions for an industry that has, and is, cutting corners when it comes to my family's safety.

Enron and others have robbed citizens of retirement security. Unscrupulous homebuilders and their lobbying efforts are taking what little I have left to rely on as an average citizen, the family home. When construction defects, predatory lending schemes and arbitration are party to this investment, it becomes a painful, expensive burden for homeowners and their families.

According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, homeownership encourages individuals to invest in their local communities. Besides being taxpayers that contribute to schools, roads etc, we are ten times more likely to be volunteers, to vote, join groups, garden and make improvements to our community. We are the backbone of each and every community in the state of California and deserve better.

It is too big a blow to lose the stability we had in homeownership. We aren't free in America, we are led by the nose or prodded to believe we are, when in fact we are corporate cattle who have been sold time and again to the highest campaign contribution. Governor Schwarzenegger you promised no special favors for interest groups. Please, think of your constituents and DO NOT HALT REGULATIONS, but rather take measures to ensure enforcement and accountability.

New defective homes are not affordable. In California the term "affordable housing" is a misnomer, as no middle income family in California today can possibly afford the continual costly repairs and maintenance of these deficient dwellings. Any moratoriums on regulations can and will create more victims. I am gravely concerned about those Californians that lost their homes in recent forest fires and implore you to consider how many fly by nights and unscrupulous others will take advantage of those seeking to rebuild their lives.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Matthew McGuire
